Olfa D’Angelo was elected as chair of the next Gordon Research Seminar. She will be responsible for organising the seminar in 2024 at Stonehill College, with the help of her co-chair, Navid Hooshanginejad from Brown University.

At the Gordon Conference 2022 on Granular Matter, Olfa D’Angelo won two poster prizes: one for the Gordon Research Seminar (GRS, for young scientists) and one for the Gordon Research Conference (GRC). She was therefore invited to give a talk at the GRC.

MSS uses additive manufacturing to mimic human organs for the calibration of computed tomography

MSS has developed significant expertise in additive manufacturing. Around one hundred students learn a plethora of 3D printing processes every year.
In collaboration with partners from medical imaging, MSS 3D-printed imitations of human organs for the calibration of single-photon emission computed tomography.
These so-called phantoms represent the appearance of a typical patient’s brain and allow the calibration of the process with the aim of higher resolution images of the actual patient.

Lehromat 1000 – MSS supports public schools in teaching under pandemic conditions

For the large group of students in elementary and secondary schools, the government’s response to the spreading Covid-19 pandemic means that classes will be cancelled for long periods of time. An alternative to distance learning is alternate teaching. Here, half of the class is taught at the school, while the other half of the students are taught at home via distance learning. The Lehromat 1000 is a device designed to assist the teacher in alternate teaching. With its help, the non-present students are fully involved in what is happening in the classroom.

Brownian motion of particles in fluid is a common collective behavior in biological and physical systems. In a new report on Science Advances, Kai Leong Chong, and a team of researchers in physics, engineering, and aerospace engineering in China, conducted experiments and numerical simulations to show how the movement of vortices resembled inertial Brownian particles. During the experiments, the rotating turbulent convective vortical flow allowed the particles to move ballistically at first and diffusively after a critical time in a direct behavioral transition—without going through a hydrodynamic memory regime. The work implies that convective vortices have inertia-induced memory, so their short-term movement was well-defined in the framework of Brownian motion here for the first time.

MSS goes Space: Experiment with MSS participation on the ISS

Astronaut conducts Cornell experiment on the space station  – Cornell Cronicle, Dec. 16. 2019.
Orbiting 250 miles above the Earth on the International Space Station, astronaut and station commander Luca Parmitano conducted the experiment „Inertial Spreading and Imbibition of a Liquid Drop Through Porous Surface“ designed by Professor Michel Louge, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Cornell university, on Dec. 11.  MSS collaborated by developing an experimental technique to produce large fluid drops in microgravity and testing the apparatus in drop tower experiments.

A team of five MSS researchers works currently in Bordeaux to perform parabolic flights. Focus of the experiments are the dissipative properties of granular systems under conditions of microgravity. Paper on DNA-programmable self-assembly published in the journal ‚Science‘

A research collaboration involving Prof. Michael Engel reported the self-assembly of gold nanoparticles of a particular shape with DNA ligands into clathrate colloidal crystals. The work required a combined effort of state-of-the-art synthesis techniques and DEM computer simulations.

ESA project „Drop Your Thesis 2015“ is entering its critical phase

Today three of our colleagues, Jonathan, Laura, and Flo, started for the drop tower facility in Bremen. There they will put the last pieces of the experiment together and perform the last mechanical and security tests. The actual drop of the experiment is scheduled for beginning of next week. We wish them good luck and good data.

Over 1000 participants of the „Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften“ listened to the lecture of Prof. Pöschel

The institute participated at the Science fair “Die Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften Nürnberg-Fürth-Erlangen, Saturday, 24.10.2015″, 6pm to 1am. Prof. Pöschel spoke in front of over 1000 people in the fully occupied Audimax, the biggest lecture hall at the FAU, about realizing microgravity conditions on earth without going to outer space. The lecture was accompanied by several experiments performed by members of the chair.

Lidia Almazan (member of the group) and her soccer team made the second place at the German University Großfeld Championship 2015 for women. They lost against the team of the university Marburg in penalty shootout.

Eric Parteli was appointed to the editorial board of Nature – Scientific Reports.
Launched 2011, Nature – Scientific Reports is a multidisciplinary journal of the Nature Publishing Group (NPG), which covers all areas of the natural sciences – physics, biology, chemistry, earth sciences and the clinical sciences.

Matthias Schröter will work as a Privatdozent at MSS. He is an expert on granular media and will intensify the experimental research at the institute.

Drop your thesis – microgravity students project granted

Two students of the institute, Laura and Fabian, were accepted for the ESA’s drop your thesis (DYT) program. They will have the opportunity to perform microgravity experiments at the ZARM Drop Tower Facility in Bremen, Germany.
