The Institute of Multiscale Simulation was established in the framework of the Cluster of Excellence “Engineering of Advanced Materials” (EAM). The EAM is part of the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal and State Governments with the research topic “Hierarchical Structure Formation for Functional Devices”. Organisationally part of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBI) but sharing accommodation with the Excellence Cluster, the institute is uniquely placed to contribute to the teaching programme of the Department and to the research programmes of both the Department and the Cluster.
Established in 2009, the institute was built up by Prof. Thorsten Pöschel. It complements the CBI in the important field of multiscale numerical simulation techniques, the main research focus of the institute. A further focal point is formed by experimental research on the dynamics of dry granulates.
